Life is too short to be bored

I wear your Grand(ma’s) clothes, I look Incredible.

Thrift shopping is one of my favorite past times. The hunt is a thrill (all those good hunter/ gatherer skills need to go to use somehow).

The high speed my brain is working thinking, “What could I do with this?” “Can I pull that off?” “How do I clean this fabric?” and “Can I bring this into the house and not get in trouble?”

I have been a thrift shopper my whole life. It has shaped who I am in some ways. I will not buy something new if I can help it. (I do have a list of things I will only buy new) Thrifting forces me to be creative and it has developed my sense of style. It has taught me that things should be reused, fix, traded and appreciated. Things also have stories.

The song by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis f. Wanz could not put it better.

“One man’s trash, that’s another man’s come up. ”

This song is fun, catchy, and upbeat. But it also brings light to an idea that you don’t hear on mainstream radio too often.

“They be like oh, that Gucci that’s hella tight.

I’m like ‘Yo, that’s $50 for a t shirt’

Limited edition, let’s do some simple addition

$50 for a t shirt that’s just some ignorant b*tch sh*t

I call that getting swindled and pimped

I call that getting tricked by a business.

That shirt’s hella dough

And having the same one as six other people in this club is a hella don’t.”

Paying a lot of money for name brands is wasteful and erodes our sense of individuality.

What has this meant for our culture? What does this mean for fashion as a daily practice and as a economy? What does this mean for our environment?

I’d like to hear your take.

If you need me, I’ll be at the Goodwill popping tags.

For laughs.
